I agree, all the steel welding I have done on my car was with a $250 Harbor
Freight 110v MIG welder, that I usually use as wire feed mode anyway. No
need for a $600 Lincoln or Miller, I have been using mine for over almost 2
years. Check out www.80tq.com to see some of the things I've welded,
including swaybars, coil overs, and all kinds of engine stuff.

I'm sure it would work fine with up to 1/4 inch steel. And I don't think
anybody on this list is going to build with anything thicker than that.
Fabbing things like motor mounts out of 1/8 inch is entirely adequate.
With 75/25 argon/co2 mix it makes very pretty welds.

I would say anybody who advises against a 110 welder for home use doesn't
 have any experience with them.

Personally I run a Lincoln Electric with the MIG conversion kit. A
Coca-Cola CO2 bottle provides the shield gas. The entire setup cost about
 $400.
If you buy a bottle and nice roll around cart you'll be into for about 6-700
 dollars.

It's one of those tools that you wonder how you got by without.
