2.5l upgrades for the NA I5

If the 2.3 you are talking about is the NF or NG, then it uses
144 mm rods.  In the late '80s VW tuners routinely made 2.0 L.
stroker kits with  92.8 mm stroke, 144 mm rods and 82.5/83 mm
pistons with a shorter deck to pin height.   Start calling around
to the VW tuners and see what they might have lying around. Try
Ron Wood (VW Specialties) or Darryl Vittone (tectonics).  With a
good exhaust and a Schrick cam (272) you should see around 170-5
hp.
