Type 44 10 speaker stereo systems, advice needed

Hi list!,
I am wondering what my options are.  My car has the factory 10 speaker
system.  The PO had a new head unit installed, so most likely, they did not
utilize the factory crossovers and amps, that I would assume it has.  Do any
of you have an understanding as to how this system works?  Is it completely
proprietary??  Can I utilize some aftermarket crossovers to send the signals
to the factory amps?  I do not even know if it used (originally) high
impedance (speaker level) or low impedance (RCA) to control the signal path.
My assumption: the front has woofers and tweeters in the doors and midranges
in the dash, rear has woofers in the deck and tweeters in the doors.
 
Can anyone provide an explanation on how the system works???
