My best deals involved a couple of VW Diesels:
1) Current work ride is a '91 Jetta Diesel. Got it
last July with 72K on the clock. $1800, a bit scuffed
up in the front end (spoiler, plastic trim, etc.)
...easily the best $1800 car I've ever had.
Woman at work got the car from her Dad...she wanted a
Camry...and was whining "what am I going to do with
this Diesel?"... I wander by, cup the hand to an ear,
and proclaim..."Did somebody say DIESEL?". My
checkbook never moved so fast.
2) In '96, I spent $2000 on a Golf Diesel with 108K
and owned by a VW tech at a local
dealer...mechanically the car was excellent, its big
problem was faded paint. And the car came with a
second set of wheels and tires.
Big bonus...Tony took care of me at the dealer with
good scrounged parts, occasional discounts at the
parts counter, and helped me out a great deal with
BTDT advice when I was working on my fleet of V-A-G
cars.
To that point, the Golf was the best $2k car I ever
bought and I still have it with well over 225K on the
clock.
Bottom line...you gotta be nimble & flexible.
