The flap controls *where* the air comes from -

Sorry about the confusion, that's what I was trying to say... The exploded 
diagrams in my Haynes manual are all drawn from an angle that you can't see 
unless the engine is outside of the car.  It makes my brain hurt when I think 
about my engine and I say silly things. :)
