The noise probably is in the strap (that flat metal arm that's anchored to 
the body a bit below the top hinge and runs inside the leading edge of the 
door).  I've stopped the graunching noise by spraying it with a lubricant 
that includes some teflon.  Hi-tack spray lubes work too.  The strap is 
what keeps the door from opening beyond the capacity of the hinges.
