The spread of 'bad science' is somewhat disturbing.

In the first place, a concentration of petroleum fumes strong enough to
ignite is so chokingly unpleasant that no one would hang around for a
millisecond.  The occasional whiff you get when filling up is as close to
flammable as Bill Clinton is to sainthood.

In the second, a vehicle being started up is a prolific source of sparks -
the starter motor alone produces enough (the pundits would have us believe)
to blow every gas station in existence into orbit.
