h2o pump removal; crankshaft laziness, no 2084!

another 87 4kscq question:
When replacing the water pump and water pump only is
it absolutely necessary to loosen the crankshaft (i.e.
need 2084 tool)?
If timing marks are marked in white and cam sprocket
is removed to then remove rear pulley cover to then
finally access the water pump, then can't the cam
sprocket just be put back in place with the correct
marking alignment?
I am trying to avoid purchasing the 2084 special part
tool (crankshaft lock tool) to keep costs to minimum,
as well as keeping repair time to minimum.
Anyone know the price for the 2084 tool?
Is the 2079 tool needed too? or can an
extension/leverage bar be used (bumper clearance
issues?).
Are these tools avail only at dealer (have yet to call
them)?
Besides my laziness, why does the crank bolt have to
be loosened anyway, io no comprende?
NOTE, work on engine is being performed in car
