5 cyl. funny sounds

My 1990 FWD 90, has recently developed some strange sounds coming from the
engine.  The first is on startup and lasts while the engine is cool, and
sometimes during stop and go driving, but eventually goes away when the
engine is warm.  The sound is like a quiet metal on metal whine, it sounds
like the cooling pump without coolant.  The next newer sound is a heavy
tapping on deceleration, like a Jake Brake (tm) on large trucks.  If I
accelerate the tapping goes away, and only on deceleration does it come
back.  The car has 156,000 on it and the lifters were done a little more
than a year ago.  Could the lifters have gone already?  Usually the lifter
noise is on startup and goes away, but this sounds heavier than just a
lifter.
