cracks between valves: how bad is it?

They're allways cracked.  The spec is that they can be reused as long
as the cracks do not exceed a width of 0.5mm

Of course, if the junkyard guys don't know this you can tell them you
want a junk head to practice porting on and you'd be willing to take
that cracked one off their hands cheap;-)
