Thanks to all who answered my call for help.
The culprit turned out to be the aft connection of the support rod which
attaches with a plastic connector to the shift rod coupling assembly.
The plastic part was missing entirely and, I was told, is not available
as a parts item.

An aftermarket parts search turned one up at The Parts Connection for
less than half of the dealer price.

It took 7 minutes to take the old one out which was really very simple.
Hope the new one goes back in the same amount of time.
