OK, I looked further and found this out:

1. The so called "NF" engine has two versions:

   - The early version is used in the 1987-88 5000 non-turbo, has the
old style 1pc intake manifold, and the injectors fit directly into the
head. The head's part number for this engine is 034 103 351 G.

   - The later version is used in the 1989-91 100 non-turbo, has the
fancy 2pc intake manifold, and the injectors mount to the manifold.
The head's part number is 034 103 351 D up to a certain VIN, then
     043 103 351 C from then on.

2. The "NG" engine is used on the 87.5 CGT and 1988-92 80/90 cars with
the 10V I5, and has the 2pc manifold/head setup like the late version NF.
   It uses the 034 103 351 C head throughout.

Conclusion:
The early NF engine is basically a 2.3 liter, high compression version
of the earlier KX/KZ/JT line of I5 2.2 non-turbo engines. The late
NF is also 2.3 high compression 130hp, but has the 2pc intake manifold
and different head.

Whew! Talk about confusing. So when we refer to an "NF" engine we'll
have to be clear which version we're talking about. Maybe coin them
NF-1 and NF-2?
