Spyware may be sinister (and probably is) but a downloadable freeware
firewall program, ZoneAlarm, will block access to the net by any program on
your computer (including spyware) which you choose to block.  It will also
block incoming probes unless you specifically authorize such probes.  I use
ZoneAlarm to provide some added security for my always-on cable modem
connection.  It seems to work quite well.  It comes highly recommended.
