If you are new to welding I'd recomend going with a much cheaper MIG welder.
They will weld most of the things you will want to do (except for aluminum..
at least not very well anyway). I started out with a MIG unit from Harbor
Freight for about $200 that could weld with gas or flux cored wire (you'll
need a gas bottle and regulator for gas welding.. about $70 total for the
two). http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=36691
was the one I bought. Right now it goes for $279 but it goes on sale for
$199 every few months.

The welder I'm using right now is a Lincoln Squarewave TIG 175 that I bought
on sale at http://www.weldingmart.com for about $1600 with free shipping...
which is important since it weighs about 200 pounds! Not cheap by any means
but it makes beautiful welds on just about anything. You have to have a bit
more of a "touch" to weld with TIG however. MIG will be much easier for you
if you are just starting out.
