I've spoken with more than one person in the Audi/VW hierarchy who have
told me that they lost money on every V8Q they sold.  It was their
flagship so they wrote if off, couldn't have a Luxury Brand without a
Flagship.  Supposedly they took the old (up to 1985 or so) Mercedes
model, tell the engineers to build the best car possible, once that's
done we'll add X % to the price for profit.  That price worked out to a
sticker at the time of $70K + (1990 dollars here).  They ended up
discounting them and selling in the mid $50K range, so it's possible they
actually did lose money on every unit.  But then again, we've all seen
the type of creative accounting that goes on out there.
