Iain - (I know you asked for an off-list reply, but I thought I would share
this with all) - Make sure you get the type of compression testor that will
have a fitting on the end that allows you to screw the end into the spark
plug hole. I believe that you can order different plug thread adapters.
This is in comparision to the type of testor that just has a rubber nozzle
on the end, which you have to hold with slight pressure against the spark
plug opening. Also, check to make sure that there is a release button at
the gauge head. With this button on the unit, your reading is held until
you depress the button. Using the button/screw-in type will allow you to
be ablle to insert the testor, go turn over the engine, come back and note
the reading, all as a one person operation. I do not have the JC catalog
in front of me at the moment, but I do believe they sell both types. I
have had good experiences with purchasing items from JC through the years
(not connected with them except as a customer).
