Colin, Phil and listers in general!
First thanks to all who responded to my last week's question about the 2084
and all that stuff!
The timing belt change went exceptionnaly easily for me as it was the first
time I did it!
I have to say that there is absolutely no need for the 2084 tool to break
the crank pulley bolt loose. You just have to locate the hole in the clutch
housing (pretty low, you need a mechanic mirror to locate it), then with the
engine at TDC, turn it back a few degrees in order to align the hole in the
clutch housing with the one in the flywheel (yes there is a hole in the
flywheel). Then you remove a tranny mounting bolt (big M12) and put it in
the hole. That's all, now you can break the crank pulley bolt loose, remove
the tranny bolt, turn the engine back to TDC and remove the crank pulley and
the timing belt. Once you're done with the new timing belt, put the pulley
back on, double and triple check the timing marks alignment, then just turn
back the engine to the position where the two holes are aligned, put the
tranny bolt back in, torque the big fat bolt (don't forget to loctite it) to
450 Nm and you're done.
It has worked just fine for me, so I am now convinced that this was somehow
forethought from the factory just in case the VW2084 wouldn't be
available...so it should work for you if you don't want to go through the
trouble and expense of buying a 2084.
BTW, Audi still wouldn't sell one to me, even though I mentioned to them
that there's an european law that says they should like Phil mentioned last
week, so this is why I did it this way and will do so the next times I'll do
timing belt changes
Wow, this has gotten a little longer than I intended it to be! :)
Regards and good night to all of you!
