After reading many an archived post about welding, and consulting my
favorite machinist, I decided not to bother. I had the manifold re-surfaced
for flatness, and mounted it with new hardware. I don't hear any ticking
when cold (besides maby a lifter or two), nor do I smell unusual amounts of
exhaust from the engine bay.

Thanks! I photographed just about every aspect of the turbo conversion, and
hope to have a good step-by-step writeup someday.

the tie rod issue.
I priced the 2-piece manifold and found it to cost more than the motor did.
For the same price, I could have a nice efi setup. 2Bennett supplied a tie
rod for about $90

Stock 1.4bar until I have an intercooler. Then I plan on either an IA or
SJM 1.8bar chip + spring. 1.4 bar is still more than enough to get me into
trouble. In 5th gear, 60-90mph comes very quickly, and the car just keeps
pulling!
