Alan - Not sure of the year of your car, so this may not apply. Since you
said that the engine was hotter than the radiator, and the gauge had not
shown the expected increase in temp readings, here are some items to check.
Possibly, the thermostat is not opening up fully, thereby keeping most of
the hot coolant circulating through the engine instead of the radiator.
If you have a temp SENSOR on the engine, which would be feed information to
the ECU, then the ECU you may have shut the engine down when too hot of a
condition existed. The temp SENDER for the gauge, normally connected to
the flow for the radiator, would have been showing a cooler engine. The
comparison information of both units by the ECU would be again telling the
ECU to shut down the engine. Check the validity of both the SENSOR and the
SENDER, along with the validity of the thermostat. If the water pump was
not functioning, then yes, you would not have a full flow condition, if it
stopped in a position to partially block the flow with the impellers, but
then you should have heard the bulley noise against the belt, or a broken
shaft noise. Again, these are just some genneral suggestions, gained from
prior experiences of mine.
