Old/New Audi comparisons?

Some of the cars didn't really have competition, which made it
very difficult to compare to others.
For example, the '92 S4 at under $50k was far less money than the
approx. $60-62k asking price of the M5 and the $65k+ price of
the 500E. The 535i and the 420E were nowhere near the performance
of the S4, so it kind of was stuck in this limbo of competing against
cars that were over $10k more expensive, or blowing away similarly
priced cars that were really apples-to-oranges comparisons.
The '91 200q was, at $42k or thereabouts, good competition for the
535i, but Mercedes had no V-8 powered competition (or did they?)
back in '91. I think the car got some very good reviews, just that
Audi was really in the sales pits at the time and not many people
considered the cars at all.
The Type 89s and the B4s were very expensive, IIRC, relative to
the competition- that didn't help things either. I remember that back
in '91, a 90q20v cost far more than a BMW 325i. The price disparity
and the power deficit about approx. 30hp didn't help things for Audi,
unless you live in the snow belt.
