Don't think that's quite accurate - for example, we got a toyota camry in
1988 for 14,000$ with AC,power windows and a 5 speed - that's it, it was
pretty bare.  In 1998, my boss bought a 5 speed toyota camry with power
windows and AC - for 14,500$.

I think that you'll find that many have kept their prices for like models as
similar as they can - with the exception of the 3 series BMW and a few select
others.
