Manual Transmission Fluid Review (and what to do before winter)

David,
I hope I am not spreading misinformation, but my understanding is that
you need to use a GL-4 rated gear oil in your transmission. Did you use
GL-4 Redline MTL or MT-90, or did you use their GL-5 rated gear oil?
It is my understanding that the synchronizers do not like GL-5 rated
oils,
hence the difference in products between 75W90 and MTL/MT-90.

Subject: Manual Transmission Fluid Review (and what to do before winter)

I just replaced the manual transmission oil in my '90 80Q (hadn't been
replaced since god knows when) with Redline Synthetic 75w90. Shifting
feel is much improved, and I can actually get into 2nd gear reliably in
the mornings. I must thank whichever lister it is was who recommended
this to me (if my computer had corrupted both hard drives I'd have a
specific name to thank). I cleaned out both the fill and drain plugs of
whatever the gunk was inside of them. I assume these were contaminants
in the old oil and the plugs are magnetic? Also sprayed some silicone
lubricant on the rails for my sunroof, much easier to open now - not
that I'll have the chance to use it for a while.

Is there anything else I should do/replace before winter sets in (I
don't have money for winter tires/wheels)? The car is already on Mobil
1 synthetic...

Thanks,
David Miller
