They are adjusted warm, not running.  Which means pulling all that crap
on top quickly so the engine stays warm... then you just measure the
lash and swap shims as necessary.  I did this on my coupe when I was
installing valve seals, just because I was in there, and although I
changed a couple, it really was not necessary.

There is a warm spec and a cold spec for lash, for ex and int. valves -
manual advises the warm spec is more accurate.
