heater core surgery '88 80 fwd?

Have to replace heater core - tried additive to coolant = NG.
Major removal of dash called for by the book.  Seems like engine bay
cowl space fwd. w/s might permit access to interior and ultimately
heater core through judicious employment of a Dremel tool and cut-off
wheel. Comments? Cure worse than disease?
