Nothing to feel dumb about, I've seen this twice, once it happened to a
25+ year Audi tech friend of mine (on his own car too.)  I know for a
fact that I always overtighten bolts and nuts, but I overtighten evenly,
have NEVER experienced a problem from giving it that little extra "umph"
with your hand high on the ratchet.  You can do this with German
hardware, don't try it on Asian anything unless you have a drill,  an
easyout and plenty of time.
