it seems that audi changed their minds on this one...

the definitive answer is in the workshop manual for the 016 non-torsen (ug,
4h, 5h, and 7z), page 00-11 "towing".  "if the vehicle has to be towed by a
recovery truck with the front or rear axle lifted and the lifted wheels
cannot turn freely, it must not be towed faster than 50km/hr or further than
50km"

My Owner's Handbook says that's only valid if the front wheels can rotate.
That's why I always tell people to RTFM.
