Older hi-perf engines were designed when manufacturing en mass the
excessively tight clearances necessary for enough journal bearing support
at high speeds was difficult, so they used larger clearances
necessitating higher viscosity oil. As manufacturing capability improved,
thinner (less drag, better fuel economy and emissions) oil became
feasible.
