I think I chose the wrong brake pads...

This is not just an Audi problem, our Saab 900 turbo does the same thing in
very cold wet weather. Saab did a recall to fit larger slash shields but it
does not completely fix it.
Incidentally, my A6 had been sitting around for a while before I bought it
and the brakes were very poor to start with, but have now resumed normal
operation after 1000 miles.
