You are correct, this is NOT good.

You can do this with everything attached. It's not a
problem to "collapse" the axle a bit and pull it off
the diff. hub. Then drop it and take it out inboard.

I have used a puller only once on an Audi, but almost
every time on Dorf FWD products. (Escort, Tempo) They
seem to weld theirs on. Once I had to use the puller
and heat and the BFH to get one off.

I've done them in as little as 20 min., drive to
drive.(with air tools) Audis often cooperate with
this procedure, at least for me so far.
