Loud noise---Please Help

Hi!

I had it the other way around: The alternator bearing(s) were
on their way out, the alternator made horrible humming/metalic
noise and at some point my system voltage (sometimes) jumped to
over 18V. Drove around for a few days with everything electrical
on to keep voltage down to about 14V keeping my battery from
cooking. Then I had the bearings replaced. Back on the road again.
Doides, regulator and brushes were still fine, btw.

So, maybe, the alternator bearings are on the fritz...?
