Just a BTDT, if you're looking for technical info delete now. The 5KS
was getting a bit loud in the lifter department. Since it's a backup
beater, it also serves the role of test bed for me. About 5 years ago I
began pouring half a quart of ATF fluid into the crank, a week or so
before the next oil change. The lifter noise completely (well, I still
get a little on startup if the car has sits unused for a week or so)
disappeared, and so far no ill effects, no oil leaks, no oil burning,
etc. 5KS probably has 220K+ miles on it, it went for a while with a
broken odo so not too sure.

I have been told by a machinist friend that ATF will "rehydrate" O rings
and seals that are dried out.
