How about the noise is actually the belt getting traction on the
alternator...at lower rpms it slips and then finally catches
causing the noise and also creating a "return to normal" level of
power which seems like the lights are getting brighter but actually
they are returning to normal from a lower voltage...? Does this
make any sense?

Might be. Thought about that last night. This assumes, at first
the belt slips without noise and then delivers power correct with
a "god awful" noise. Unusual to me. Ok, totally depends on how
your definition of "god awful" is though...:>
On almost every car that passes me on the sidewalk in the dark
with a screeching belt got dimmed headlights during that period
of time.
Whatever. We will keep an eye on your alternator..:)
So long!
Ero.
