We-e-e-ell... There are two oil pan bolts that go up into the pump.  The
oil pan (sump) gasket seals against the bottom of the pump as well as
the block.  If you feel confident of maintaining that seal when
reassembling, go ahead and leave pan in place.

When I decided to replace my oil pump gasket on the coupe (due to a
towing nightmare) I was not going to risk this nasty potential leak.
Pan gaskets are around $10 or so.  Get two, and a 20V windage tray for
about $40, and consider it a cool meaningless upgrade while you're in
there!

note: if you install the tray, you should first cut off the "wings" that
stick out fruther than the pan gasket at the rear, to make it easier to
reinstall the "engine to transmission shock absorber" a/k/a that funny
bracket between the engine and tranny...
