Don't use Outlook or Outlook express and the virus propagation disappears
(excluding viruses that are explicityly opened locally, that's another
discussion).
Until people realize that having embedded IE-style web page viewing with
ActiveX, Javascript and other "active" scripting in your EMAIL program is
not smart. It just invites viruses.

Eudora (http://www.eudora.com) Windows, Mac *free*
Pegasus (http://www.pmail.com) Windows, Mac *free*
Kmail, Pine, Mutt, etc. on Linux
Anything else that is not Outlook
