Ground short???? long

I had similar experience with the '84 5KS, I traced it to the "Stephen
Wire" and the big round connector that it goes to.  Look in the archives
under "Stephen Wire", it's origins are explained there.  It's a
blue/black wire running from the fusebox to a round plastic connector (up
inside the bowels of the dash).  I ran a new thick gauge wire direct from
the fusebox paralleling the "Stephen Wire" and all has been well for over
a year now.

It's one possibility, but with Audi electricicals, the only thing we can
be sure of is that you should never let the smoke out of the wires.
