Not sure about the Audi exhaust but I once had a 944 which the cat failed.
The guts of the cat ended up trapped in the rear muffler.  I only took the
exhaust off to get rid of the rattle but I poured out several cups of "kitty
litter."  The performance also was much improved.  Both cats on my 91 2C have
been "hollow" since the day I bought the car.  I don't think the rear
mufflers are plugged though as I once installed a temporary pressure gauge in
the exhaust system and readings were on the low side of the spec. but I have
never tried to empty them.
