overboosting (1987 5kcstq)

Yeah, you can get more boost until you hit the fuel cutoff
at approx. 4400 rpms, which is a pretty violent and unpleasant
cutoff. The fuel cuts off because the ECU senses a fault and shuts
everything down in order to prevent damage to the engine. Now if
you bypass these safeguards and force the fuel to remain on, you
can experience this boost for an exhilarting time, until the
engine goes BANG! and you destroy it.
That's a really, really STUPID thing to do. If you want to experience
this, just buy TAP's "chipset" for the 5ktq and pinch off the lower
wastegate hose. I disclaim all responsbility for destroying your engine
in this manner- you can do this at your own risk.
The fuel system in the 5ktq is not capable of sustaining stoichiometric
air/fuel ratio much beyond 15-16 psi, from the information available on
the list archives. Due to the inability to supply sufficient fuel, boost
beyond those levels will result in a lean condition which may do such
nasty
things as burn holes in your pistons, throw rods or other bad things.

So....I can mess with one hose on my 86 5ktq and get more boost? And at
lower RPMs? Why spend all that money on springs, chips , turbos and
downpipes when I get put a calibrated leak into a hose? What key piece
on information am I missing here? If you could recommend a book
containing these pieces of information, that'd be great. The Bentley
isn't exactly a textbook. -Brian
