Not likely that there was a quantum with a 16V in the US. 8V yup, not
16V. The 16V engine did not arrive in the US until 1986 and that was in
the Scirocco only. In '87 it went into the GTi and Jetta GLi 16V's and
when the new Passat arrived in '88 or '89, then the big VW got the 16V,
and ultimately the new VR6 which arrived with the Corrado.
