Check first, it's more likely to be the caliper sticking... pull the
cable and see which one won't move easily. 

Third, the big one: half an hour later, clutch pedal went to the floor
and stayed there.  I was able to pull it up with my foot, only to change
gears a couple more times, then the clutch is inoperative ( always
engaged).

Most likely the slave cylinder... smaller chance of it being the
master.  replace it.

when it doesn't work, clutch will not disengage.  engine stays connected
to tranny full time.
