1 Spring or 2 Springs????

I normally replace springs in axle sets but you don't have to if the
replacement spring matches the one still on the car.
Some years ago I replaced a broken spring on the front of my MiL's Sierra,
to keep costs down I fitted one and as the car sat level and didn't appear
to sag on the side that I hadn't replaced, I didn't bother with the other.
Tried the same dodge on my own car a little later and failed - the each
spring for that was three times the cost of the one for the Sierra.
