check engine light

Dealer says solenoid that operates the EGR valve is bad on 97 Cab 2.8l.
Dealer price is unreal. $140 just for part.  Is solenoid a generic part and
if so, p/n available?  How difficult to change? or can I just
plug/disconnect something to get the light to go out. Car drives fine,
mileage good, so I don't think I am hurting the environment.
