Springs on 100 Avant CS Quattro 1986

My car has done 165k miles, and the ride, especially the rear, is very hard. I changed the shocks with little improvement, and am thinking of changing the springs. This is especially since I compared with my second identical 100 CS quattro that I use for parts that has only done 110k miles, and at rest the chassis sits 1 inch higher clear of the rear wheels than on my "good" car.
At the moment I'm planning to match up my new shocks with the better springs on the second car.
Does anyone have experience of putting on new springs at this mileage, and how much difference it makes? Also do all 100 Cs quattro avants have a hard ride - a sacrifice of comfort for handling?? Its so much more bumpy than my old BMW 528I se (1981) and my wifes Peugeot 309 1.6sr. Its also much more fun to drive when I push it, but I often with a family, in London, I don't get the chance.
Any thoughts/experiences to share??
William
