Ur quattro gearbox woes

I was contacted this morning by an Ur quattro owner with gearbox problems
who had been pointed my way by the local Audi dealer.
He's in the process of rebuilding his quattro and wants to have a gearbox
overhauled. He's got the choice of two boxes, one of which 'chatters' in
fifth gear and the other has synchromesh problems.
Never having had to deal with Audi box problems (other than changing the
oil) myself, I said that I'd ask for advice.

Are these boxes DIYable?

If so, are there any things to watch out for?

If they guy doesn't want to risk it himself, has anybody any recommendation
for a re-builder? Preferably in North-East England (York, Leeds, Bradford
etc).
