I think he's right.  Audi refers exclusively to the early turbos as 'air
cooled' - I think they even reinforced this in a TSB at one point.  The 'run
down' after what Audi refers to as "spirited driving" should be done with
the car in motion - not parked and idling.

Curiously, the major airflow in a stationary car - at least on that side of
the engine - comes from the alternator cooling fan.

But Audi have said on the record that oil contributes very little to cooling
down the turbo.  Even on the water-jacketed versions, the water only stops
heat from cooking the oil - it doesn't do very much towards cooling the bulk
of the turbo.  A 'run down' is still recommended.
