My greatest success to date has been with a long, very high grade and
correspondingly expensive CHISEL!

I have a proper, professional pilot bearing puller using a slide hammer.
Not very effective. The 'fill with grease and smack in a tight-fitting
mandrel' trick certainly doesn't work on my MB or MC engines - the pilot
bearing cage is closed at the far end.
