5kq vs 4kq transmission ( was - Ur quattro gearbox woes)

That makes sense, but is the final drive set partially by the rear diff? If
so, I would think that you would be required to change the final drive ratio
for the front drive (have no idea how one would do this) in the tranny too
in order for this to work. Otherwise, your front and rear wheels would be
using different final drive ratios. Correct?

I am sure that the 5kt tranny has taller gear ratios in the transmission.
Quoting from Audiworld's historical guide:

85 - 87 4kq:

1st: 3.60:1
2nd: 2.13:1
3rd: 1.46:1
4th: 1.07:1
5th: 0.83:1
Rev. : 3.50:1
Final Drive: 4.11:1

85-87 5ktq

1st: 3.60:1
2nd: 2.13:1
3rd: 1.36:1
4th: 0.97:1
5th: 0.73:1
Rev: 3.50:1
Final Drive: 3.89:1

So the conclusion is that the 5kt tranny has taller gears from 3rd up, and
the final drive IS different. But, you can still get taller gearing my
using
the 5kt tranny with the 4kq rear diff.
