HP hydraulic hose

From what I've read on the Quattro, 200q20v and V8 lists, Colin, very few
folks have found successful non-OEM replacements for the high pressure
hydraulic hoses on these cars. There have been reports of getting local
hose suppliers across the country to duplicate the low pressure hoses with
no problems, and, as I say, a few owners have managed to find cheaper
replacements. Several have reported getting a working hose that makes
strange noises. Many have reported apparent successes that failed shortly
thereafter or in a few months. I wouldn't bother taking hoses around to
local guys who make up hoses for big trucks or heavy equipment. Those
hoses often have much larger flow rates, even though the pressures are
similar, and I think that makes a difference. For the amount of difficulty
involved, especially in replacing the hose from the pump to the steering
rack, I've gone with OEM. I own several tractors and other equipment
using high-pressure hydraulic hoses, and have no qualms about having their
replacement hoses made up locally. I went around to my usual suppliers the
first time I needed a hydraulic hose for an Audi, and found nobody could
supply new endpieces, and that decided the issue for me. Subsequently, as
I've said, I've read on these lists that only a few places seem to be able
to make the hoses up correctly, so I've concluded the most reliable
approach for me is to buy OEM. I'll just skip an evening's dining out to
make up the difference if I need to.
