Nothing other than the fact that Australia has vast wild land and it
fits the image that Subaru is trying to portray for its commercials.
The cars are indeed Japanese.

As the article says, it's an unfair comparison.  While strictly
on performance terms the WRX and the Lancer Evo are on par, or perhaps
even exceed the S4, they really aren't the same class of car.  The
S4 (and the BMW) are premium cars and built/furnished as such, whereas
the WRX and Lancer Evo are pumped up econoboxes.  I think the C&D article
failed to quite convey that fact, but the moment you sit in these cars
it should be obvious.
