What should EGT/pyrometer read on 10vT?

I remember every time we leveled off when I was flying with my
father(he had a group of 4-5 other guys he shared a Mooney 201 with),
first he would increase the pitch on the prop slowly to pull the
engine into its peak power band(this is when the plane would
noticeably accelerate; not as much so as when levelling off from
takeoff, but still appreciable); then, he turned the mixture control
out from full rich until the EGT needle came off the peg...then every
so slowly turned it until it drifted up smack into the middle of the
green range. Tada, perfect mixture, perfect RPM, perfect pitch...
