In the late 70s, VW/Audi developed a series of diesel engines that had
a lot in common. One 1.5/1.6 4-cylinder, one 2.0 5-cylinder and one
2.4 6-cylinder. They share the same pistons/valves etc., but the 4-cyl
uses a different arrangement with intermediate shaft etc., while the
5-cyl and 6-cyl uses the regular I5 arrangement.
Volvo used VW/Audi diesel engines from the mid 70s until this year,
when they finished developing their own 5-cylinder diesel.
